Outline of the Program Content:

As a basic part of the human condition sexuality is an ADL addressed with diverse individuals across the lifespan. Occupational therapy is a safe place for addressing sexuality.  Empathy, sensitivity, and openness are necessary aspects of the therapeutic relationship and the foundation of OT. They are fundamental in addressing sexuality. Education, remediation and modification all play a role in OT treatment interventions (AOTA, 2013).

Application or Relevance to Occupational Therapy Practice:

The Occupational Therapy Practice Framework: Domain and Process lists sexual activity as an ADL. In an ever-changing health care environment that is becoming increasingly complex and fast paced sexual health and intimacy can be left unaddressed.

The overall goals of this discussion are to:

Increase occupational therapy practitioner’s comfort level in addressing sexual health and intimacy (through the PLISSIT and Intentional Relationship Models)
