2021 TOTA Black History Month Lecture Series

Free to all members of TOTA! As the nation recognizes the month of February as Black History Month, the Texas Occupational Therapy Association would like to do so as well. It is most fitting that Black OTs and OTAs be celebrated for their many talents, research, and commitment to the profession. We as practitioners celebrate the diversity within the profession as well as the ability to include and provide equity amongst all individuals. Kira Beal, OTR, OTD, Ed.D(c) - Facilitator of lectures

LOCATION: Virtual Zoom Meeting (can be watched from any computer location with internet access, do not need to be physically present)
TOTAL CEUS/CCUS: 1.25 CEU (per session attended) **Not including A highlight of Black Occupational Therapist and their contributions to the Occupational Therapy Profession which is not eligible for credit.

Role of Occupational Therapy in Guardianship
Objective: After this presentation, participants will explore and understand the three roles of occupational therapy in guardianship (non-traditional setting). The three parts of guardianship are:
1. initiation
2. administration
3. monitoring.
The three roles of occupational therapy are as follows:
1. O.T. as assessor/evaluator
2. O.T. as fiduciary (guardian)
3. O.T. as Court Visitor.

1. Understand cultural difference and similarities in the Black/African American culture
2. Understand how the use of racial stereotypes can hinder how occupational therapy practitioners provide care
3. Consider ways to partner with other professionals to support the children you serve in your practice 
4. Identify three ways to provide individualized care to children with a variety of cultural differences.
5. Identify ways to provide culturally competent evaluation and treatment services to minority children.
