Course Description: Pediatric stroke is an underrecognized cause of long-term neurological impairment in children. This presentation explores occupational therapy’s role in improving functional outcomes after stroke and its contribution to early detection of cerebral palsy.
Learner Objectives:
- Describe the prevalence and clinical impact of pediatric stroke.
- Explain the role of occupational therapy in the evaluation and treatment of children with pediatric stroke.
- Identify evidence-based occupational therapy interventions and current rehabilitation research used to support upper extremity recovery following pediatric stroke.
- Identify assessments and screening tools used to recognize infants at high risk for cerebral palsy.
- Describe the role of occupational therapy within a multidisciplinary medical team in the early identification, referral, and diagnostic process for cerebral palsy.
- Apply knowledge of pediatric stroke rehabilitation and cerebral palsy identification to support early intervention and improved functional outcomes in pediatric populations.
