Course Approval

Beginning October 1, 2026 all CE Providers seeking approvals will utilize our new CEU Locker system.

Course Review/Approval Fees:

Expedited Fee: $50 Required for submissions < 30 days before the course; optional otherwise.
Featured Course Fee (Optional): $100 for a 30-day listing of $150 for a 60-day listing 

Typical processing time is four weeks. Typical expedited processing takes 1-2 weeks. These are not guaranteed.

Approval Duration: If approved, TOTA will assign a course approval number and is valid for 12 months. This number applies to the initial presentation and to later presentations of the same course, using the same material, presenters, objectives, and related content. Approved courses may be submitted for renewal.

CE Hours are counted in quarter-hour increments. Time spent on registration, meals, breaks, testing, in expos halls, or reading in preparation is not countable. 

Submit your course with supporting documentation and the non-refundable application fee at least 30 days prior to date of program. Per TBOTE regulations, all courses must receive prior approval. Courses that have already taken place will not be reviewed.

Supporting documentation must include:

• Course Description
• Measurable learner objectives
• Time Schedule and content for each segment
• Instructor(s) names and their CV or résumé. Speaker bios are unacceptable.
• Application or relevance to the practice of occupational therapy
• List of References: At least two in APA format within the last 10 years that directly support course content 
• Sample Course Evaluation Form
• Sample Certificate

Course Certificates must include:

• Name of licensee
• Title and Date of Course
• Number of Approved Contact Hours
• TOTA Approval Number, along with “TOTA Approved” or CEU Locker Seal
• Name of Authorized Signer
• Signature of Authorized Signer OR officially seal, letterhead, or logo of authorized signer

Course Listing: Approved courses can be listed in our real-time, searchable course listing feed at no cost. CE Providers can choose not to list their courses. If you wish you to feature your course on our homepage in addition to the approved listing, we offer a 30-day listing for $100 and a 60-day listing for $150.

Statement of relevance to occupational therapy describes how course content directly relates to occupational therapy. See §362.1 of the OT Rules on the TBOTE website for the definition of occupational therapy practice and to learn more about our scope in Texas.

Practice Areas determine reviewer assignments.  View descriptions in section 5 here. 

Common reasons for courses not being approved:  If content is outside of the scope of practice for occupational therapy in Texas, the course uses outdated terms or does not have supporting evidence, and/or is an Unacceptable Activity per TBOTE. Reviewers cannot approve courses on the following topics:

• A work setting’s philosophy, policies, or procedures or educate employees about a specific work setting
• Business development, general professional behaviors/standards, or customer service
• Team Building
• General leadership courses
• Social work, defensive driving, water safety, GRE/GMAT/MCAT prep, CPR, HIPPA, FERPA, 
• General foreign languages, hazard waste disposal, patient privacy rights/abuse

Does TOTA approve courses for the Texas Human Trafficking requirement for license renewal? TOTA does not have the authority to approve CE for Texas Human Trafficking courses. Please contact HHS for approval.  If your course was already approved by Texas HHS, then you may submit your course to TOTA for approval or advertising.

Benefits of CE Approval include free advertising on our searchable approved course listing, available to both members and non-members, targeting over 12,000 OT practitioners in Texas and beyond. Per TBOTE, courses approved by TOTA are pre-approved for CE credit for license renewal.
