Ciara McKenzie
MOT student at University of Texas at El Paso

What is your OT history? Where did you go to school? How many years have you practiced? What is/ are your current practice areas/s?
I am currently an MOT student at the University of Texas at El Paso. I plan to graduate in December 2022 and hopefully work in the DFW Metroplex after graduation.

How has your heritage influenced your professional OT role?
I believe that being an African American woman has ingrained a sense of resilience and strength in me. This resilience has helped me to navigate the challenges that may come along with the OT role.  My heritage is also a culture steeped in love and unconditional care for others. I take pride in helping others and being their loudest cheerleader.  My culture and family have poured into my life, so that I may pour into others.

What professional or association issues, needs, concerns energize you and why?
Diversity in the OT profession is an issue that really sparks my interest. African Americans make up around 5 percent of the OT profession. An increase of accessibility, knowledge, and awareness of the OT profession in minority schools and communities would help advocate the benefits and beauty of the OT profession. An increase in diversity would bring an innovative and uniquely creative perspective to our practice.   I was privileged to have a mother in the OT field, who encouraged me and motivated me. Without her guidance, I doubt I would be in this field that I have come to love for its unbounded creativity and fulfillment. There is a future OT practitioner somewhere in the world right now who may not yet be aware of OT. It is our job to remedy this. Representation matters. Diversity is the very future of OT.

Which OT practitioner/s do you admire and why?
I admire my mother, Regina McKenzie, OTR for her guidance. She has been my biggest cheerleader throughout my whole life. She has helped me grow exponentially! I know she is someone I can always depend on! I also admire Ursel Lovett, OTR for taking me under her wing, encouraging me to stay grounded, and motivating me to finish strong in my Masters’ career.

What are your current areas of interest or study?
My current areas of interest are PEDs or Mental Health/Behavioral Health. I would also like to look into the field of preventive studies and wellness. I have seen how preventable conditions and diseases have impacted all communities, especially the African American community.  Helping others to understand how to reduce their risks for these conditions would help them to live their lives to the fullest.
