Lecture 1: Postural Stability and Distal Mobility Required for Occupational Participation Live Date: Saturday, September 12, 2020 Time: 01:00 PM – 02:00 PM Central Standard Time Speaker: Estrella Barrera, MOT, OTR Associate Dean, Health Sciences, Austin Community College Outline of Program Content: This program is an introduction to functional kinesiology and principles that enhance occupational engagement.
Lecture 2: Cultural Competence in A Hispanic/ Latino Surging Community Live Date: Saturday, September 19, 2020 Time: 02:00 PM -3:30 PM Central Standard Time Speaker: Jack Ruelas, OTD, OTR Fieldwork Coordinator, UT Rio Grande Valley MOT Program Outline of Program Content: Learning will take an active look at what occupation is to individual clients and investigate their own personal occupations. Learners will also engage in active introspection to identify conscious and unconscious biases that lead to poor culturally relevant treatment. Learners will review strategies and intervention ideas to provide culturally relevant treatment.
Lecture 3: Inequities in our Society: How the OT Profession prepared us for Crisis Live Date: Saturday, September 26, 2020 Time: 02:00 PM -03:30 PM Central Standard Time Speaker: Dahlia Castillo, OTD, OTR Program Director, UT El Paso MOT Program Outline of Program Content: This program is an introduction to theories that guide practice with an emphasis on improving client outcomes by becoming self-aware of those issues that impact client-centered care.
Lecture 4: Pathways into Occupational Therapy: We are in this Together Live Date: Saturday, October 3, 2020 Time: 02:00 PM -03:30 PM Central Standard Time Speaker: John Luna, OTD, OTR Assistant Professor, UT Rio Grande Valley MOT Program Outline of Program Content: Learning will take an active look at pathways into and through the occupational therapy. Learners will briefly review the KAWA model and its benefits and an evaluation method in the context of an occupational therapist career. Learners will engage in a reflective approach on their personal path into and through the field of occupational therapy; Identifying barriers at common congestion points in the profession and corresponding opportunities to advance their careers. Finally, learners will identify personal factors that can facilitate both their success and the success of subsequent generations of occupational therapists.
